Prince Philip Heritage

On June 10, 1921, Price Philp was born to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. So, on the Greek island along with the cost of Corfu, he was born to a son of princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark a prince of the Greek royal family and a descendant of German princes from his mother. However, he was mostly a Danish royal since the Greeks recruited his grandfather, a Danish prince, to be their king in the 19th century as he has German, Danish, and English royalty in his heritage. Furthermore, he was the youngest child as he had four older sisters named Princess Cecilie, Princess Sophie, Princess Margarita, and Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark who all married German princes.

All was going well until In 1922, Philip's uncle, the king of Greece, was forced to renounce his throne after the debacle of the Greco-Turkish War. Philip’s father, who was working in the army, was accused of committing treason and exiled. Fulled with fear their family fled to Paris, where they would be for the next decade, but it was an extremely difficult period for them as they had to turn to family and friends for support. Moreover, his mother, Princess Alice, had a nervous breakdown and ended up in a psychiatrist in Switzerland. While his father, Prince Andrew, drifted to Monaco, where he died at age 62.

With no parents to care for him, Philip’s mother’s family the Milford Havens and the Mountbattens—stepped in. The family had ties to the British royal family and many of the royal houses of Europe. Since, Alice was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and the oldest daughter of Louis Mountbatten, the first Marquess of Milford Haven. uring that time Philip experienced another series of tragedies. When he was 16, his sister Cecile, her husband, and their two children were killed in a plane crash. Just a few months later, his uncle and guardian, George Mountbatten, the second Marquess of Milford Haven, died suddenly of cancer at the age of 46. Gordonstoun's German headmaster, Kurt Hahn, was the one to break the news. “His sorrow was that of a man,” his headmaster is said to have recalled.

When Philip left school, he joined the Royal Navy where he had the honor of meeting meet his third cousin, 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth & her sister Princess Marget. (They share a great-great-grandmother in Queen Victoria.) Later he and princess Elizabeth fell in love as, seven years later, in 1947, the pair announced their engagement. So on the big day in 1947, Philip married Elizabeth renounced his Greek citizenship, and became British, Anglican as his new official title was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
