Behind the Walls of Fenway

Home of the Boston Red Sox

By Campbell Smith

On April 12th, 1912, thirty-five thousand fans gathered in Fenway Park to watch the Boston Americans play their first game in the first ever major league baseball stadium against the New York Highlanders. After nine innings, the Boston Americans came out on top with a final score of 5-2. Since this game, a lot has changed. The New York Highlanders are now known as the New York Yankees, and of course, the Boston Americans are now the Boston Red Sox. Not only did the teams change over the years but so did the stadium.

The Green Monster, also known as the left field wall of Fenway Park hasn't always been there. In 1934, renovations were done on the park. They rebuilt the left field wall and made it 37 feet tall. However, it wasn't the "Green Monster" yet. The walls weren't painted forest green until 1947. Renovations didn't stop there. Red Sox fans wanted to watch the game from the green monster, so in 2003, seats were added on top of the left field wall.
