Collaborative Story: The Grey World

The following story was written by 8 individuals, alternating sentence by sentence.

Only the very oldest people remembered a time when humans could see in color. Now everything is a dull gray, and nobody could ever experience the beauty again. I have always wondered what it looked like, to have some happiness in the world. Just imagine how many different colors there were.Imagine how beautiful the sky would look, or the grass, and the plants around us with a splash of happiness. When I look around I only see shades of gray. I always wondered how the sky would look without the dark gray smoke blotting it out. The only thing that’s good about this is that HALF OF THE CURRICULUM IN ART CLASS is gone so I won’t be failing. At least, this used to be the case until that one day.

It was 3:00AM and I woke up to a loud bang, so I decided to look out my window. When I went outside there was nothing to be seen. Slowly, the fog cleared up and at first it was so bright I had to hide under my blanket. Slowly I came out from under the blanket and looked out, my mouth dropped. Everything seemed normal, except the fact that the sun was shining at the wrong time of day. It was night, but the sun was out, and the sky was a bright blue, it was amazing, I ran outside to get a better look! Right as I stepped out the door, a hand clamped over my mouth, and a bag went over my head, as the stranger carried me away. The stranger threw me over their shoulder, tossed me in the trunk of a car, and slammed it shut, as the car sped away. I wondered if the color was just in my imagination, or an illusion to trick me to go outside. The weird masked man took the bag off my head, I looked around to see that I was in a dungeon. I realized that it wasn’t my imagination or a trick because I could see the color of the torches along the wall of the dungeon.

“Who are you?” a voice asked, jolting me out of my color stupor. I observed my surroundings and slowly turned towards the direction of the voice.

“First I want to know where I am,” I demanded sharply.

“Oh honey, you don’t want to know,” the man said in a slightly drunk tone.

The man spun me around in my chair, locking both my wrists and neck with brackets, as a large screen awoke before me. I clenched my fist in frustration, trying to hold back the anger within me. I closed my eyes, hiding away from whatever tricks lie in front of me, but I couldn’t help but peek when I heard a voice.

There was a woman on the screen dressed in a black pantsuit and there was a strange look in her eyes like she was hypnotized. She looked vaguely familiar but I couldn’t put my finger on who she was, but the weird thing was, I could see family resemblance between us. The woman started to move closer to the screen. She then repeated it.

“Welcome home sister.”
