Detroit Lions: How to make the Playoff Push

The Detroit Lions are having a shaky start starting the season 1-3. Let's have a quick recap. The Lions played the Bears in week 1 and gave up a 17 point lead and in the end could have won the game but D'andre Swift dropped an easy game winner. In the 2nd game in Lambeau Field we lost 42-21 and we had A LOT of injuries coming into that game. The 3rd game, we won our first game of the season and our defense seemed to do well with 3 picks. The 4th game we were up by 14 in the first 5 minutes then gave up 35 consecutive points. We eventually came back, and made it a 6 point lead and we needed 1 stop on defense to give the offense a chance to win the game, but we didn't get the stop.

First of all, fans need to understand that firing Matt Patricia and selling the team isn't gonna do any better. We haven't really given Patricia a chance and look at his seasons. In his 1st ever season as a head coach he went 6-10. In his second season he went 3-12-1, which is not good, but he didn't have his QB for half the season, and pretty much all the games were within one score. Coaching takes time. Each coach has his own view of the team. When you bring in a new HC, they're gonna change everything up. Matt Patricia isn't doing the best but what if he hasn't gotten a chance to get the players he needs for his scheme to work. The other thing is the Ford Family. Selling the team ain’t gonna do anything different. The owners just own the team and pay high salaries. They don't do the draft picks, they don't make trades, they own the team, not run it.

Another thing is that a few fans say stuff like “Stafford is trash” but i’ll tell you that is NOT AT ALL true. Matt Stafford has broken so many NFL records. It's not all about wins, everyone judges QB’s on wins and losses, but you need a FULL team to win championships and games. Matt Stafford carries so much of this team. are only 2 QBs that are arguably better than Stafford, who are Russel Wilson and Patrick Mahomes. didn't have the draft pick to get him. And both of those QB’s haven't broken any of Staffords records anyway.Does everyone know how hard it is to get a QB that will be the fastest to 40,000 passing yards, 2nd all time for yards per game, 9th all time for 4th quarter comebacks, 19 all time for passing yards (maybe more now). There are so many stats that a lot of QB’s aren't gonna get to.

Another thing is BAD LUCK. There have been SO MANY bad penalties on the Detroit Lions that cost us games, Last year against the Packers and the Chiefs (we should have beat the SUPERBOWL champions, and note that the one team Mahomes didn't throw a TD against was the Detroit Lions. Then there's the game against the Texans, where the runner was down. The playoff game against the Cowboys where the PI flag was picked up. and the Hail Mary against the packers, the 0-16 season, so many games were close, then there's this “Bobby Layne curse”. A lot of things are happening in Detroit.

Now we are going to talk about the pros and cons. First the pros. We have had a pretty good offense over all with Bevell and we ALL saw how good Stafford was with Bevell last year. he was a sleeper MVP candidate until he went down with an injury. and note that Stafford played a few of his games with broken bones in his back last year. The defense has improved except thatDarius Slay and Quandre Diggs are gone, but they didn't want to be here and you're not gonna have success with players that dont wanna play here.

We are also starting to get somewhat of a run game but we are definitely running the ball too much. Matt Stafford’s throwing attempts this year are much lower compared to last year. That's fine though b/c we need a run game. Patricia is doing a decent job bringing in veterans like Desmond Trufant, Jamie Collins, Duron Harmon, Trey Flowers, and Adrian Peterson

Now the cons and there are a LOT of cons about the Lions right now. The main bad thing about the Lions is they can’t close out games, it's been a problem. We have given up big leads but in the end it comes down to one play, if we stop it we win, or we get a chance to score and win the game in the last seconds. The 3 teams that beat us with a score of over 10 points were the Vikings twice, Buccaneers and Broncos. The rest of the games last year we either couldn't close out on defense or we didn't have Matthew Stafford to have a game winning drive. Also we need to do a better job of keeping big leads, we have blown so many leads, i have seen times where the lions are up 37-0 against the packers but the lions can't do that every single time. The lions can still make the playoffs this year by going 8-8 and look at our schedule, First we play the Jaguars then the Falcons, we could lose but I think we will most likely win those 2 games, then we would be 3-3. Then we play the Colts. They are a decent team. It’s hard to tell what’s gonna happen in that game. After that is the Vikings and we lost to them 42-30.

And 20-6, both bad scores but if we win the 3 games before that we would be 4-4 and hope is still real even for a 11-5 season, anything can happen. Then we play the Redskins which I believe we can beat. and the Panthers and I can't really tell what would happen for that game. Then the Thanksgiving game, we need to play good defense against the Texans to win that game Then we play the Bears which I'm sure we can beat unless we have injuries. The Packers are up next at home, and I think we will lose that game. But they have played bad teams, the saints got off to a bad start so….Then we played the Titans where last time, we lost by 1 point. idk what’s gonna happen for the Buccaneers game and then we close out the season against the Vikings.

All in all we could go 9-7 8-8 or even 11-5 and make the playoffs.

The Lions have a lot of work to do and to be honest we just need the defense to do good, if the defense does good and I mean god level (which i dont think will happen) we could go 12-4 to lead the division and who knows? Maybe lift the Lombardi Trophy in Tampa Bay this year. If we did host a playoff game and go to the superbowl or something, it would be the most lions thing to do it all in the year where we cant have fans to watch the game.
