An issue that comes up for many of us at school is dress code. Several schools enforce dress codes for a variety of different reasons, while others let students dress freely. So, which one is the better option?
One reason kids should have dress codes is because it promotes a more serious school atmosphere which emphasizes academics and promotes good behavior. Additionally, dress codes have proven to increase student achievement by encouraging students to concentrate more on their studies and less on their wardrobe. Less emphasis on clothing can also save money, as there will be less pressure to keep up with expensive trends and fashions. Furthermore, dress codes in school settings reduce social conflict and peer pressure that may be associated with appearance. Studies also show that a school dress code can reduce the prevalence of certain behaviors which are often expressed through wardrobe such as violence or promiscuity. In contrast to uniforms, dress codes still allow students to wear what they want which leaves students with a sense of choice and expression. Finally dress codes are also helpful because it can help school administrators identify strangers on campus. If random people show up to a school, maybe intending to hurt the people there, and they are not aware of the dress code policies, they might stick out of a crowd and it would be easier to identify them and neutralize the threat rather than having to look for a stranger in a school where there are no dress codes.
On the other hand, many people also argue that dress codes negatively affect people and are against the idea of it. One reason might be because they simply can’t afford it. Sometimes, in order to attend a school, you must have a specific type of outfit, which some people can’t afford. This causes trouble for them and could give them more financial issues than necessary. In addition, dress code violation suspensions could result in less learning. Also, many students feel like they are not able to express themselves with dress codes. In some situations, there are gender biases with the dress codes enforced. For example, girls might have to wear skirts while boys don’t, and this can cause issues, because some girls would rather wear pants in the cold weather, or simply because they feel uncomfortable with skirts. Likewise, there could be other problems caused based on each individual dress code and what the regulations are, as students might feel like they are not able to express themselves freely because of the dress code.
Whether you are for or against dress codes, there are some strong opinions on it and schools are working to create the best solutions for students.
