You sit down at your desk to finish the homework assignment that you have been putting off for days. You start typing your essay, only to find yourself watching youtube videos a few minutes later. A few minutes turns into an hour, an hour turns into two hours. If you are someone who procrastinates then this article might interest you,
How to stop procrastinating. Procrastination is often confused with laziness, but
they are very different. Procrastination is an active process ,you choose to do something else instead of the task that you know you should be doing. laziness suggests apathy, inactivity and an unwillingness to act. These are some tips/techniques we can all incorporate in our daily lives to overcome procrastination.
Minimize distractions
One of the biggest reasons we procrastinate are distractions, anything that stops you from doing the task you are supposed to be doing is distraction, that maybe your phone,
Text messages, phone calls or social media apps. You can minimize these distractions, for example by, putting your phone out of your sight.
If you can not see your phone, you won't feel the urge to stop what you are doing and start using it. Out of sight, out of mind.
Promise yourself a reward
Another technique you can use to overcome procrastination is, promising yourself a reward or a treat, you’re probably dreading the next however many hours you need to finish this task. Just tell yourself that when it’s over, you get to celebrate with one of your favorite things. Use that anticipation to push yourself through the pain.
Tackle the most important task first
Tackling your most important task first will make sure you put all of your energy into the hardest, most important task first. If you look at it logically we should give most of our energy to the task that requires most of our energy, but most of us just start with the easier tasks and leave the hardest one for last. And with the little energy and motivation that remains we try to do the hardest task, which isn't always the best technique.
