Whats Next for Dortmund: Why Their Future is Blurry

By: Jack McLane

Borussia Dortmund is an extremely strong German club mainly known for being Bayern’s top competitors in the Bundesliga and creating young superstars. Some of those young superstars are Robert Lewandowski, Ilkay Gundogan, Christian Pulisic etc. But then they sell them away and buy more young stars and start over, forever making them pretty good and then having a good Champions League run. But right now Dortmund is currently sitting in 5th in the Bundesliga, sending every single person who is remotely involved in the clubs front office into panic. If you didn’t know the top 4 teams in each major league qualify for the Champions League and get money based on how far they go. A major club like Dortmund not qualifying would mean they don’t get the money needed for their future. Although it is early the teams in the top 4 are currently playing in pretty good form. So, Dortmund published something saying their top players' minimum asking price and so they can get that money back, and make their team super again. Some of those players are Giovanni Renya and Erling Haaland. Haaland is a young superstar and already a top 15 player in the world and Renya a young player starting to show out. Renya isn’t particularly great yet but is still very expensive and so is Haaland. Usually young players are going to be the most expensive players on the market so Dortmund is making the right decision.

So right now I have explained what Dortmund’s clear decision is, their future is the opposite from blurry. But, do they really want to give up? I mean they are only in 5th place and get those games back. It would be extremely difficult due to the fact that they are 7 points behind 4th and there are only 7 games left in the Bundesliga season. Like I said before they could try and win the rest of their games and maybe barely jump to 4th, or they could sell and probably make more income than making the Champions League. But, Dortmund is a winning football club, with a strong team they could make a really good run, but of course 1 or 2 losses would bury them completely, keeping them out of the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund’s future is unclear and blurry. Although we all are 99% sure we know what is going to happen, both options for Dortmund right now are good ones. One may be better than the other, or they could try and somehow combine both options. They could sell a player like Haaland for around $97 million-102 million and buy 2 very strong players. Players to keep them in the now. Players like Mario Icardi, Toni Kroos etc. Of course Kroos’s asking price is going to be very high so you could target Gonzalo Higuian from Miami FC for a smaller price and have a strong veteran striker up top and have an efficient midfielder to work with Higuian, Sancho, Hazard, Renya etc.
