Black History Month: Sojourner Truth: By: Mariam Dukhan

Sojourner Truth was born in 1797 around where New York is today to Elizabeth and James Baumfree. Fun fact, her real name was Isabella Baumfree. Anyway, Sojourner was born into slavery and escaped with her baby daughter, Sophia in 1826. Unfortunately, Sojourner's two other kids and husband didn't make it out. In 1828, she learned that her son, Peter was illegally sold as a slave and he was in Alabama.Sojourner went to court and she was the first black woman to win a case against a white man. She was finally reunited with her son. Here are a few famous quotes that Sojourner Truth said, "Truth is powerful and it prevails", "If women want any rights more than they's got, why don't they just take them, and not be talking about it", "I am not going to die, I'm going home like a shooting star".
