X: A Poem Inspired by Teddy Roosevelt's Diary Entry the Day His Wife and Mother Passed Away.

What does that X signify? Does it symbolize your heart, etched out by the ink of despair? Or is it pinpointing the precise moment, at which you crossed out your future plans?

It is so meticulously carved into the paper, as if written with blackened blood, measuring the painful process. Or is it out of unconditional love, patiently pressing your mark into time?

If your light had gone out, how did you make the X so clean? Was your wrinkled hand guided by memory? Or are you used to the darkness, eyes adjusted to the shaded past?
